Timing the notice around your money

Three dates deserve a look before you pick the notice day: your next 401(k) vesting date (leaving days before a cliff can forfeit thousands), any bonus payment date (many require being employed on pay date), and your PTO accrual date. Sliding a resignation one week can move real money — our PTO payout calculator and 401(k) match calculator price two of the three.

A worked example

Notice given Monday, July 6 with standard two weeks: last day Friday, July 17 — 10 working days between. If your 401(k) match vests on July 20, sliding the notice to July 9 costs three days of job-search time and saves the entire year's match. That's the kind of trade this page exists to surface.

What to do in the two weeks

Beyond the handoff doc: get your PTO balance in writing, confirm the final-paycheck date with HR, note COBRA/benefit end dates, and export anything personal from work accounts on day one — access sometimes ends earlier than employment does.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count two weeks notice?

Convention is 14 calendar days including two full workweeks: give notice on a Friday and your last day is the Friday two weeks later; give it midweek and it's the same weekday two weeks out. It's courtesy, not law — the date you write in the letter is the one that counts.

When do I get my final paycheck?

State law controls: some states require it on your last day (California if you give 72+ hours notice), others by the next regular payday. Most people simply receive it on the normal schedule — but if it's late, your state's rules likely have teeth, including waiting-time penalties.

Do I get paid for unused PTO when I quit?

Depends on your state and company policy — several states treat accrued vacation as earned wages that must be paid out. Run your number in our PTO payout calculator and check the handbook before your last day.

Can my employer end my employment before the two weeks are up?

In at-will states, yes — some companies walk resigning employees out same-day (common around sensitive data). You're generally only owed pay through your actual last day worked, which is worth knowing before timing a resignation around a bonus or vesting date.
