The furlough math

days: cost = (salary ÷ 260) × furlough days
weeks: cost = (salary ÷ 52) × weeks · % cut: cost = salary × % × months ÷ 12

All three shapes reduce to the same question — what fraction of your working time is unpaid — but they hit cash flow differently: furlough days pepper small dents across checks, full weeks produce zero-income weeks (often unemployment-eligible), and percentage cuts shrink every check by the same amount.

A worked example

$65,000 salary, 10 furlough days over 6 months: $250/day × 10 = $2,500 gross — about $417 less per month during the stretch, but closer to $310/month in take-home since the lost income comes off the top tax bracket. Knowing the after-tax number keeps a scary announcement in proportion.

The two moves worth making immediately

First, file for unemployment or your state's work-share program the first unpaid week — partial-schedule benefits exist in most states and go unclaimed constantly. Second, ask whether 401(k) matching and PTO accrual continue during the furlough; the answers change the true cost and are easier to negotiate at announcement time than later.

Frequently asked questions

What is a furlough?

A mandatory unpaid reduction in work — full weeks off, specific furlough days, or a cut schedule (like 32 hours instead of 40) — where you remain employed and usually keep benefits. It's the employer's alternative to layoffs during a rough patch.

Do I keep my benefits during a furlough?

Usually yes for short furloughs — health coverage typically continues (you may owe your premium share), and that continuity is most of why furloughs beat layoffs for everyone. Confirm specifics with HR, especially for furloughs beyond 30 days.

Can I get unemployment while furloughed?

Often, yes — full-week furloughs commonly qualify, and many states pay partial benefits for reduced schedules through work-sharing programs. Apply in your state the first unpaid week; there's no prize for waiting.

Can exempt salaried employees be furloughed by the day?

Only carefully — an exempt employee who works any part of a week generally must be paid the full weekly salary, so employers furlough exempt staff in full-week increments or formally convert schedules. Day-by-day salary docking of exempt staff is a compliance red flag.
